July 1, 2019 - Argentia Ferry from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia

July 1, 2019

Happy Canada Day!
We woke up this morning to more cold, damp weather and lots of fog. It’s not the sort of weather one expects in July! Oh well - at least it wasn’t raining.

We got high centered (as Lynn would say) for awhile because of a neighbouring camper who came by and talked Lynn’s ear off... TWICE! A very nice man but, as Lynn would also say, he was a bit of a radio (because he talked continuously) which seems to happen to us on a fairly regular basis. It’s always nice to visit and meet folks but sometimes, you just want to get on with your day and people don’t always take the hint when you start to pack up your stuff as they keep talking!!
Anyway - we finally extricated ourselves from the chatty camper and went to head off and.... Lynn’s trike wouldn’t start. Again.
Crap.

So - we hauled out our trusty Cobra and voila - no problems. It fired right up. Thank God for that thing. It saved our bacon twice!

We only needed to go 135 kms today to get to Argentia to catch the overnight ferry back to North Sydney, Nova Scotia but we didn’t want to take a chance so we decided to leave early and head straight there and find lunch in Placentia Bay.
Boy - it was a good thing we did.

The ride down was good - overcast and a bit chilly but at least dry. We found the Three Sisters Pub in Placentia Bay and settled in for a good lunch in this cozy little place. By the time we finished, it was just starting to rain so we beetled over to the ferry terminal, checked in and got in line. By that time (only about 30 minutes later) the wind was howling and it was pounding down rain. We hustled into the terminal waiting area and for the next hour and a half, we watched the rain come down in torrents, sheeting sideways in whipping wind. We got in just in time! There were a few other motorcycles that pulled in later and the riders all staggered in, drenched in the deluge. We sure got lucky...

Once on board, we found our berth and dumped our gear. It’s a 16 hour ferry ride from 5pm to 9am so we booked a berth to get a decent night’s sleep. I had a glorious shower and warmed up and, for the second time in over a month, I did my hair and DIDN’T have helmet head for dinner. It’s so nice to be clean, dry, warm and presentable... ha ha ha...

We went to the lounge for a cocktail and then we headed to the buffet which was really good. After dinner, we went back to the lounge and they had a couple of guys playing music - lots of Johnny Cash and Newfoundland tunes. A traveller asked to join them and he played the accordion and, to be honest, he was the best part of it all. We danced a bit until the boat got too rock and rolly. By 11:00, we retired to our little cubby hole and were pleasantly lulled to sleep by the rocking of the boat. We had Lynn hopped up on Gravol again and we were both relieved that he was fine given that we did hit some fairly rough water in the open straight. It was a lovely evening.
