June 13, 2019 - Lac Megantic, PQ to Bar Harbour, ME

June 13, 2019

We were sad to leave Maison du Lac and all said we could have stayed there for a week. The house was so lovely and Lac Megantic is such a pretty place with much more to explore than we had time for (our ongoing dilemma!) but it was time to push on.

Today, our destination was Bar Harbour in Maine. We left Lac Megantic and headed southeast and crossed into the US just east of Woberg. We rode route 27 through Maine which is a beautiful secondary highway so there wasn’t much traffic and, for the most part, it bobbed and weaved through gorgeous rural countryside. We stopped at a lovely cafe for lunch and a warm-up as the weather became overcast and cooled off to about 16 degrees.

We skirted through Bangor (I had to admit, I was disappointed not to run into Stephen King) and just as we arrived in Ellsworth, the sky started to open up. And LORD did it rain. It rained and rained like End of Days rain as we came into Acadia National Park and approached Bar Harbour. What stymied us was that there is an unbelievable amount of traffic coming OUT of the area that just went on and on for miles. We found out later that there is an enormous cancer research center in Bar Habour and, when it closes for the day, the employees leaving the center create a New York worthy rush hour that stretches for days.

It was raining so hard that we decided to ditch trying to get right to Bar Harbour tonight. We pulled into one of the first Motel/Cottage places we found about 12 kms before BH. We were so grateful to be out of the rain, cold and traffic. We strung sopping wet clothing over everything - the TV, the chairs, the beds, the bathroom, the microwave... it looked like a steamy laundry. There was NO WAY we were going to go out again to find dinner so we luckily have reserves of cheese, duck rilette, some wraps, chocolate, nuts and beer. Good enough! Thank goodness for our stash!
By 8:00, we were exhausted after fighting the cold and rain today so it was an early night.
